The “Ospedale Maggiore” was founded by the will of Duke Francesco Sforza and his wife Bianca Maria Visconti in 1456. In the fifteenth century Antonio Averlino (known as the Filarete) realizes the project and leads for a short time the construction of the first wing. In the seventeenth century, Francesco Maria Richini was commissioned to continue the architectural work with the erection of the Courtyard of Honor. The building was finally completed in the 19th century. Ca’ Granda served as a hospital until the 1930s. Already in 1936 Ambrogio Annoni, joined by Pier Giulio Magistretti and Piero Portaluppi, was commissioned to design the spaces for a new functionality of the building: home of the University of Milan, founded in 1924 in Città Studi. The goal will be achieved only after World War II and post-war reconstruction.
From this moment, the ancient courtyards and the modern wing of the Headquarters of the University of Milan became spaces for meeting and confrontation between cultures, which in many occasions have become privileged exhibition spaces, Welcoming artists from all over the world.
The tour will start from the Courtyard of Honor and then go through the picturesque fifteenth-century courtyards to discover the ancient spaces of Ca’Granda
